Typographic guru P Scott Makela and Laurie Haycock Makela have been appointed 2D designers-in-residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Peter Stathis will be the 3D designer-in-residence.
P Scott Makela will bring his consultancy Words + Pictures for Design + Culture to the academy. Laurie Makela was previously design director at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
Together the Makelas plan to shape the future of the graphic design department by “bridging the gap” between theory and practice and involving the students in actual commercial projects, says a Cranbrook spokeswoman.
Stathis was formerly chair of the industrial design department at the University of Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was also director of product group Virtual Studio.
