Auto brands fail to value car interiors

Interior designers need to do more to encourage car manuf – acturers to invest in their skills.

According to the deputy chief executive of the Design Council David Godber, former director of Lotus, Audi and Nissan Design Europe, ‘It is inside cars that there are plenty of poten tial design opportunities which have yet to be realised.’

‘At present I don’t know of many cases where an interior has been more important than the brand and exterior design (of a car),’ he adds.

However, he continues that the miniaturisation of components such as music systems ‘should revolutionise vehicles’.

Godber questions whether the steering wheel will survive once people, comfort able with computer games and texting, become more dexterous. He sees no reason they will not demand to use their cars in the same way in the near future.
