Techtile topography

Typography is transformed into art by Alida Sayer, who manipulates type to create works that resemble stills from 3D animations. Her latest creations, produced for the upcoming show Presence Absence, take printed passages from stories of encounters with altered states, including Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse V and Haruki Murakami’s The Mirror, which are then painted and projected on to layers of acetate.

The show includes Sayer’s first large-scale free-standing piece, comprising big sheets of acetate containing letterforms that seem to pulsate and explode from the layers.

Sayer is joined by Zachary Eastwood-Bloom, who uses digital processes to create twoand three-dimensional works including an antique table that is partly milled down, and what looks to be a Peter Saville-inspired work, We Control the Horizontal and the Vertical. Suspended vertically, light is emitted through digitally cut edges of acrylic to create an intangible, alien topography.

A third contributor to the show, James Irwin, comments on our dependence on technology by creating a series of drawings based on computer programming systems. He is also constructing a physical space that the Internet cannot reach a Web-free cube made using network-blocking material.

Photographer Brendan Olley, meanwhile, will show a performance piece recorded in an abandoned ex-Soviet mining town in the Arctic desert, where he serenaded a mountain with a piano.
