New Year honours list 2017: David Adjaye and Anna Wintour among creatives honoured

Architect David Adjaye and Condé Nast artistic director Anna Wintour have received honours this year, alongside academics, costume and fashion designers.

A number of designers and architects have received awards in the New Year honours list for 2017.

Architect David Adjaye will become a Sir, as he received a Knighthood for his services to architecture and design, having previously held an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) title.

He is praised as “one of the leading architects of his generation” and a “global cultural ambassador for the UK”.

Adjaye’s notable projects include redesigning a disused railway station in Oslo, Norway into the Nobel Peace Centre, and his recent design of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC, US.

Vogue editor-in-chief and artistic director at Condé Nast, Anna Wintour, will also become a Dame for services to fashion and journalism. She is referred to as a “tireless advocate” for established and emerging designers. She is also a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MoMA) in New York, US.

Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)

Professor Richard Burdett, professor of architecture and urban studies at the London School of Economics (LSE), received a CBE for his services to urban planning and design.

Burdett is also a council member at the Royal College of Art (RCA), was previously a visiting professor in urban planning and design at Harvard University, and was a chief adviser on architecture and urbanism for the London 2012 Olympics. He was also involved in design projects for Tate Modern and the BBC’s Broadcasting House.

Fashion accessories designer Anya Hindmarch was also awarded a CBE for services to fashion, having previously held a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). She mainly designs bags, purses and shoes, as well as stationery and travel accessories.

Costume designer Jenny Beavan was awarded for her services to stage and drama production. Beavan designs costumes for films and stage plays, and in 2016 won the 2016 BAFTA for costume design. Victoria Beckham was also awarded for her work as a fashion designer.
