Museum prepares for next phase of revamp

The Natural History Museum will be on the hunt for designers for the second phase of its 12m redevelopment plan after last week’s unveiling of models and preliminary drawings of the first phase.

The museum appointed Neal Potter Associates, Event and Met Studio in April (DW 14 April) to work on the first phase of the Earth Galleries project.

“We don’t know when we’ll start the second phase, it depends on receiving Lottery money. But we’ll certainly look for designers in due course,” says Bob Bloomfield, the museum’s manager of exhibitions, research and design.

The first phase consists of a central atrium featuring a rotating globe structure, and two exhibitions, The Power Within and Restless Surface. Pawson Williams Architects has designed the masterplan.

The second phase will consist of three exhibitions and an earth laboratory feature.
