Microdots may take over from bar codes

Future packaging will include a microdot loaded with information, offering designers more freedom, according to Dragon International. Dragon worked with management consultancy PA’s Technology Centre to develop the concept.

Dragon claims that bar code technology could be developed into microdot technology, where detailed on-pack information could be held in a microdot to be read by a decoder. The groups are now looking for retailers or manufacturers to take up the idea.

“Packaging is a compromise between designers, who look for impact, brand managers, who want to highlight the name, and legislators, who want detailed information,” says Dorothy MacKenzie, a Dragon International director.

“Given that consumers want more information the microdot is a good way forward,” she adds. “Equipment for use at home or at point-of-sale will allow much more comprehensive information while leaving the pack clear for designers to express themselves.”
