Flexible graduates are more likely to succeed

I agree with Claire Lakey’s letter (DW 7 January); graduate designers are in a difficult position. Young designers need to be flexible.

Young designers need to be flexible. I graduated with a degree in Design Management, in the hateful position of being neither “one or the other” in design terms. I approached several design employment agencies, sent countless letters off, spent nearly six months feeling very frustrated.

I got lucky because I was flexible, and I am now a multimedia production assistant.

I was warned it would be tough to find a job. Several people who graduated at the same time as me cannot find work, and they are as good as much of the dross that finds it’s way into the public eye.

Creative agencies are missing out on a huge wealth of talent. Young people are stupid enough to work long hours and, if they have any sense, will listen to everything that gets thrown at them. So give them a chance…
