HarperCollins buys UK group

Independent publishing company Fourth Estate has become a division of HarperCollins Publishers, following its acquisition by the international company last week in a deal reported to be worth £13m.

Fourth Estate founder Victoria Barnsley is heading the enlarged company’s UK operations in her new role as chief executive officer, while the other executive members of the Fourth Estate team will remain in charge of the division.

Nobody from HarperCollins or Fourth Estate was available to comment on whether the latter company would retain its existing title or be rebranded as part of the takeover.
