English Welsh & Scottish Railway has received more than 1000 logo designs after its appeal to readers of Rail magazine to come up with an identity for the newly formed freight company (DW 10 May).

The judging of these and nearly 200 designs from staff starts next week, after which the company – the UK’s fifth biggest freight concern – will choose a design group to develop the winning creation into a working logo.

Some design groups have already been in touch with the company regarding the implementation work, says a company spokesman.

It is not known if any of the 1000 logo entries are from design consultancies.

The winning marque is scheduled to appear in September and will be rolled out over two or three years.

English Welsh & Scottish Railway comprises four former BR freight and parcels companies currently sporting professionally designed logos which were created for their privatisation.
