Travers takes Binnie’s place

Scottish Design has appointed Andy Travers as its new chief executive. He replaces Frank Binnie who stood down earlier this year (DW 12 April).

Travers is promising to promote all design disciplines to Scottish businesses. While product development will be the main thrust of Scottish Design’s work, the impact of well-designed packaging and literature is also to be advocated.

Travers, who describes himself as “steeped in design and technology”, was director of Scottish Design’s Centre for Integrated Product Development, a role he will retain for the moment. A doubling of CIPD’s staff to six next year is one of Travers’ first aims.

“Product development and design should be seen as an economic development initiative,” says Travers. “We must highlight to all companies that if they embrace design they can achieve benefits.”

Scottish Design has dropped plans to run its own design awards this year, but Scotmedia’s Scottish Advertising Awards will include design categories. Scottish Design has also handed over SD magazine to Scotmedia.
