Lettering nut Phil Baines, graphics lecturer at Central St Martins College of Art & Design, has taken students for walks round London for years to study public lettering.

Now, he and his underlings have compiled their findings on-line, at www.public lettering.org.uk, a detailed study of lettering from Westminster street signs to the London Coliseum, with a few cracking, bitchy asides: Pentagram’s British Library internal signage is a great example of how not to space capital letters, apparently. Whether to promote his new book, Type and Typography, or just feed his fetish, the site is worth a look.
