Falmouth College of Arts is planning to introduce a three-year BA (Hons) course in 3D Design, starting next September.

Its structure will be broadly based with the emphasis on innovation and issues rather than on niches such as crafts or products, says course programme leader Simon Thompson.

Environmental, ethical, economic and social concerns will figure prominently.

“We have developed our own segment in design education. We intend to teach people to be self- employed or to work for a large consultancy, or anything in between,” adds Thompson.

The course is to be divided into four interrelated elements. These will comprise new ideas, technical skills, historical and theoretical studies, and marketing and team working skills.

The course will be the first 3D design programme in the area.

Thompson expects to appoint approximately four new staff positions, subject to the course’s validation in February.
