Starck leads Eurostar redesign

A tranche of design consultancies will be appointed in the coming months to work on a full-scale £35m redesign of Eurostar’s entire service, following Philippe Starck’s appointment as artistic director.

The project, the first overall revamp since the company’s launch in 1994, will include train interiors, terminals, ticket offices, lounges, signage and staff uniforms. It is due to be completed by the end of 2003.

Design consultancies will be appointed by Eurostar, which does not operate a roster system, in consultation with Starck.

The original designs for Eurostar were created across the in-house teams of Eurostar and French and Belgian national railway companies, though there have been a number of modifications since.

In spring 2000 Paper White created a new identity for the bar and buffet cars and in November 1996 the executive lounge was redesigned by Tilney Lumsden Shane.

Jones Garrard, FM Design and Design Clinic have also worked for Eurostar.
