New high-tech optician chain Auerbach & Steele is set to confirm its first London site next month. Futuristic interior design for all three outlets scheduled to open later this year is by freelance designer Michael Girvan.

Established opticians David Auerbach and Gail Steele joined forces to form the new chain, whose identity was designed by freelance Tony Veazey.

The first outlet, which opened earlier this year in Harrogate, features white and silver fixtures in Perspex and aluminium. “We did not want it to look run-of-the-mill minimalist,” says Girvan, “we got away from natural finishes and went for synthetic materials” to create an open and clean space with all the detailing exposed.

At night purple fluorescent lights behind the cash desk illuminate the shop and “ever-changing images are projected on to the walls of the practice”, says an optician spokesman.
