Is there any justification for BT’s payphones?

I feel I must respond to Gaynor Williams’ Private View (DW 9 August), in which she justifies the new BT payphone on the basis of restricted finance and our society.

Doesn’t BT generate enough profit to make it possible to alleviate this limitation on imagination? And as for the society bit, any designer worth their fee would look to this as a challenge, not an obstacle.

I thought designers were employed to resolve these problems, not hide behind them as grounds for their inadequacies. If the truth be known, the designers met the brief but the client limited the choice available to the public, due to the restricted financial return available from pay phones.
