DW’s salary survey provided valuable guidance on rates

Can I say how helpful I found your recent salary survey (DW 15 March).

It’s very hard, as an employee working in a design consultancy outside London, to have an idea of what you

might be worth in financial terms. It all seems a bit arbitrary in the Midlands, where there’s no strong design community that I’m aware of to allow designers from different groups to swop notes.

It is particularly helpful to me as I plan to move to London in the next few months to have an idea of what pay rates I should be negotiating should I find myself in an interview.

Interestingly though, the differences between rates in London and the rest of the country shown in your tables aren’t as great as I had imagined – certainly not in line with the increased cost of living in the capital I’ve been told to expect.
