World Illustration Awards 2018 shortlist revealed
The shortlist of 200 illustrators has been whittled down from over 3,000 entries, and will go on display at Somerset House in June.
The Association of Illustrators (AOI) has announced the shortlist for the 2018 edition of the World Illustration Awards.
Now in its 42nd year, the annual competition aims to showcase up-and-coming and established illustrators from around the world, as well as highlight the latest developments in the discipline.
This year’s 200-strong shortlist has been drawn from 3,300 entries from 75 countries – over 1,000 more than in 2017.
A new experimental category features various entries that “push the boundaries of illustration”, say the awards organisers. A virtual reality (VR) project by Malaysian artist Book of Lai comprises a 360-degree, interactive installation, while Ester Goh’s work for Singapore airport features nine coin-operated, animated exhibit windows.
All the shortlisted works will go on display at an accompanying exhibition at London’s Somerset House in June, which is being designed by Liverpool and London-based studio Uniform. The exhibition will then tour the rest of the UK throughout 2018.
Individual category and overall winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Somerset House in June. Overall winners will be awarded an undisclosed cash prize for the first time in the competition’s history, provided by stationery company Rotring.
The World Illustration Awards 2018 exhibition runs from 7-20 June at Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 1LA. Entry is free. To see the shortlist in full, head here.
