Good consultancy has always been about thorough research, awareness of client needs, constant project reappraisal, communication and involvement. It’s nothing new.
The nature of design consultancy is indeed changing and broadening as clients’ own working practices, company structures and markets change. This isn’t a problem; it’s an opportunity. It suits the flexibility of thinking which characterises creative work and it enables designers and clients to get better value from the working relationship.
Designers who have this adaptability already exist.
Oh well, I suppose invisibility has its uses…
