Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station was today (Thursday) celebrating a ú5m refurbishment masterminded by The Jenkins Group.

The transformation has taken place over the past ten months, while the station continued to operate. The redesign is already paying dividends, according to Strathclyde Transport, with daily bus movements up from 600 to 1400, and passengers up from 13 000 to 30 000 a day.

The Jenkins Group, which last year won the DBA Design Effectiveness Award for its work at London’s Victoria Coach Station, tackled virtually every facet of the Buchanan Bus Station.

The main concourse has been upgraded and features new toilets, restaurant, kiosks and shops. An extension provides a new waiting area, and departure information is provided by a bank of video-monitors and information displays. The revamp also includes a new sign system.

The Jenkins Group has designed an identity for the bus station, which is reflected in all the consultancy’s work on the project, says design director David Vickery. “I don’t think there is anything remaining untouched,” he says.

And the consultancy designed furniture for the station, including bench seating created in collaboration with furniture designer Alan Zoeftig (DW 13 January).
