Lighting designer Jonathan Speirs gleefully admits to having been given ‘a free hand’ with the design of lighting for the Chicago Beach Resort development in Dubai. The project includes one of the tallest hotel towers in the world – at 321 metres – being built on a man-made island 300 metres off the beach in the United Arab Emirates city. Lead designer and architect on the project is British group WS Atkins. Jonathan Speirs & Associates is lighting two hotels, the bridge and island, an aquapark, marina restaurant and a conference centre, plus the primary interiors of the hotel where the consultancy is working with London interiors group KCA International. Speirs says: ‘The client is looking for a landmark statement with this. The project will be talked about all over the world.’
Curated by Sea Design, the exhibition focuses on the geometric identity created by consultancy Roundel, which was used on British Rail’s freight trains in the 1980s and 1990s.
