Cry ‘havoc!’ and let slip the eggs of war

Plans for the Imperial War Museum of the North didn’t receive an entirely positive reaction at their launch last week. Why, one observer wanted to know, does it look like a broken Easter egg?

Imperial War Museum director-general Robert Crawford managed to shrug off the criticism in fine style. If visitors recognised the analogy of a broken egg they would be “Three quarters of the way to grasping the intellectual idea behind it”, he told his inquisitor.

The shape of the building represents the broken shards of a globe torn apart by war.
