Work placements really do prepare you for employment

While studying graphic design at the University of Central Lancashire I was given a chance to go on a 12-month placement in the real world.

Momentum, a marketing group in Manchester, approached the university with the offer of a placement. I was placed in the capable hands of a senior art director, who then became my mentor. From this point I began to expand the knowledge gained from college.

Having a mentor enabled me to talk through and perfect any work, as I had someone easy to converse with. As the year progressed, I started to feel as if I was really learning the business. I am now able to work on my own initiative and produce commercial-standard, high quality work for account managers and their retail clients.

The experience has enabled me to cope with the pressure of deadlines and given me the skills to conduct myself professionally.

If you are offered a placement I recommend you take it and gain from the valuable experience.
