Yorkshire Gateways

Anthony Gormley’s Angel of the North, and the Humber Bridge, have both been inspirations for the Yorkshire Gateways project. The idea is to mark entry to the county, England’s biggest, with a grand gesture.

‘To be greeted by great design would be an excellent statement and a memorable indication of the importance design has in the culture of the region,’ according to Design Yorkshire.

Original ideas included a proposal to make a feature of two large, but disused chimney stacks visible from the motorway as drivers enter Sheffield.

Jonathan Sands confirms that three high profile sculptors have now been commissioned to present ideas of how to best mark entry to Yorkshire.
