Sparrows hope nest box redesign will get the tits out

Size matters when it comes to attracting tits. And 16th-inches matter more, apparently. But before you boys get out your tape measures and micro-scopes, we’re talking about birds of the non-human variety.

Aviatic experts are encouraging enthusiasts to redesign nest boxes to attract house sparrows, who were ousted in favour of tits a few years back. Sparrow numbers are now dwindling and, although hardly likely to follow the dodo to the grave, they should be welcomed back, the experts say.

So, to attract them into nesting boxes, holes should now be one-and-a-quarter-inch, rather than one-and-a-16th-inch, and there should be room for everyone, tits and all.
