Design groups need non-executives for strategic business decisions

Your article on non-executive directors (DW 29 January) made interesting reading and contained many pertinent points.

One role which was not mentioned, but which can be highly relevant to an experienced non-executive concerns the responsibility for strategic planning.

Many design groups are youthful businesses, entrepreneurially driven with excellent creative skills. This creative energy needs to be balanced by independent analysis of the consultancy’s total profile within the market and industry.

A detached, but supportive non-executive director can make a real contribution in this key aspect of evolution from small to medium-sized business.
