Seeing Is Deceiving: The Art and Science of MC Escher is the first exhibition of his work in the UK for 30 years. Visitors will not only be able to view original designs, but also enter different specially created sets where they can discover the fascinating mathematical world of tessellations, Mbius strips and optical paradoxes. Until 4 January 1998.

Out of the Fire is an exhibition of glass and ceramic work by MA students from Staffordshire University. It’s a chance to view new emerging talent, and to meet the designers in person. Work on show is by Jenny Barker, Lee Davis, Emma Wood and Karen Rough. Until 4 October.

Venue: The Arc, 4 Commonhall Street, Chester CH1 2BJ.

If you’re heading for Bilbao to see Frank Gehry’s art gallery, stop off at an exhibition entitled Solo o con leche? (With or without milk?). Featured are 50 items associated with the rituals surrounding coffee and tea, all produced by Alessi. Alessi approached 11 prestigious architects and asked them to design a coffee and tea set – the results are surprising. Until 31 October.

Venue: DZ Centro de Diseño Exhibition Hall, Sabino Arana 8, 48008 Bilbao, Spain.
