Will the real Hugh Pearman step forward

Why was Hugh Pearman so nasty about Stephen Bayley (13 June)? It must be because he wants us to think he is a thrusting, investigative, foot-in-the-door Murdoch reptile and not the nice, cuddly guy he really is.

It wasn’t the real Hugh Pearman being nasty, of course, it was his invented persona.

He could have credited Bayley as one of the handful of people responsible for making contemporary design a popular issue and admitted that, while he “virtually disappeared from view”, he earned a pretty good living as a hack with a byeline as ubiquitous as Hugh’s.
