Design is alive and well at Goldsmiths College

Being a Design Week devotee, as are my fellow students, I was interested to read Richard Murray’s article, Educated to be proud (DW 17 March).

He obviously sees the importance of design and current lack of emphasis on design degrees in colleges and universities. This also applies to teaching degrees, as design in schools leads to more students choosing design degrees.

However, design is alive and well in the Department of Design at Goldsmiths College. We are the new generation of designers who have a vested interest in design being promoted in the UK. We all enjoyed reading Murray’s article and fully endorse his sentiments.

Now is the time to encourage study of design and we should recognise our design culture.

The Design and EcoDesign Course at Goldsmiths is unusual in that it lets students manifest their ideas across a broad range of creative disciplines. The projects include product design, furniture, graphics and multimedia. The work is innovative and stimulating while rooted in social, cultural and environmental issues.

Again, congratulations to Murray on his article. Let us hope the Government wakes up and does something about promoting design in the UK.
