The Royal College of Art has been named as the top university in the world for art and design.

The RCA has taken the top spot in the 2015 QS World University Rankings, which aim to highlight the world’s top universities across 36 individual subjects.

The rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research citations per paper and uses findings and opinions from an international survey of academics and employers.

The RCA outperformed a host of US institutions including Parsons The New School, Rhode Island School of Design and the Pratt Institute, which all appear in the top ten.

The next highest ranking UK institution is University of the Arts London, which appears in eighth spot.

Glasgow School of Art is ranked tenth, Goldsmiths University is 12th and Oxford University is 13th.

Dr Paul Thompson, Rector of the Royal College of Art says: “We are delighted to be recognised as the top university for art and design internationally.

“The RCA is highly selective, taking the world’s most talented artists and designers. Those students go on to transform the world – in fine art, fashion, automotive design and engineering.”

Thompson adds: “The QS ranking for Art and Design are another resounding endorsement of London’s universities, following hard on the heels of recent surveys, which place UCL, ICL, Kings and LSE within the top tier of world ranked universities.”
