Macdonald joins MetaDesign

MetaDesign London this week welcomes Nico Macdonald as its digital design director. Macdonald is the founder of Spy Graphics and is a leading pioneer of Internet and website design.

Macdonald says Spy Graphics will now be wound down, although the freelances will continue working on ongoing projects.

A MetaDesign spokesman says: “For us both it is a logical development. He is a very adept and knowledgeable person with lots of ideas. His arrival consolidates Meta’s direction in this field.”

Macdonald says the chance to work on big Internet projects for big clients with resources to invest in electronic interface design is the key attraction. “As a small sole trader I wasn’t able to get those big jobs,” he comments.

He adds: “Meta has a good history of information design and the way it has used technology – to develop software, to design fonts and so on – has been intelligent.”

Macdonald, who was in talks with another consultancy he declines to name, says he is looking forward to working with MetaDesign founder Erik Spiekermann: “I trust Erik’s judgement more than I would most people in the industry.”
