Chocks away for the Mathmos Squadron

The in-house design team of lava lamp manufacturer Mathmos is setting up an external design consultancy business, following requests for its services.

The multidisciplinary group will officially launch this week, with graphic design and Internet design expected to form the bulk of its workload.

The group’s full name – The Mathmos Graphic Utility Squadron – will be abbreviated to The Design Squadron for everyday use.

Initially, the team will consist of just two designers, both currently members of the Mathmos team, Dave Tower and Rob Lowe. More staff may be recruited at a later date.

Lowe says that the group has carried out occasional external projects before, but will now be actively seeking new business.

It has already been appointed by a number of clients, as yet unidentified.

He adds that future plans to recruit more staff will depend on how much work the new consultancy takes on. “We are still working on all the internal work for Mathmos, so it wouldn’t take too much to get snowed under,” he says.
