Brief

Channel 5 launches this weekend with on-screen input from Californian consultancy Silver Hammer, London group X-TV and the channel’s in-house design team. Silver Hammer, which last December replaced the original on-air designer, London group Ortmans Young International, has created the red flower (top), and the woman in the shadows (cover). A test transmission loop which went out before the launch was designed by X-TV, as was the swinging screen image (above). Wolff Olins handled the branding.

Ron Arad Associates has created a new sports café concept for brewer Kronenbourg and sports equipment group Adidas. Run by Kronenbourg but with heavy Adidas branding, the café’s eating and bar areas are separated by a large carbon fibre tube. The tube contains an individual flat screen television for each table in the eating area; and the bar features a large projection screen for major sporting events. The tube also contains the cabling for the television screens. The first example of the format opened in Toulon last month, with further branches to follow in Paris and six other French towns and cities over the next 12 months. If successful, the format may be developed for other European countries.
