Imagination claims first place in Design Week Top 100
Imagination has maintained its first-place spot in the Design Week Top 100 survey, despite an 11 per cent drop in fee-income over the past year.
The consultancy came out top of the 2010 survey, with a total fee-income of £34m, compared to the £38.4m it reported when it claimed the top spot last year.
AKQA returns to make it to the second spot, with a fee-income of £30.9m, while Radley Yeldar comes in third – up from sixth last year – with a fee-income of £12.1m.
Last year’s second- and third-placed consultancies, Red Bee Media and Gensler, have not entered this year. Red Bee Media was barred from entering, as it is part of a global group.
Figtree has reported the highest growth in fee-income over the past year, at 43 per cent, with Boxer reporting a 39 per cent growth Pancentric Digital reporting a 36 per cent growth.
Impact IM has seen the biggest drop in feeincome – down by 48 per cent – while Brinkworth has reported at 45 per cent drop and Conran & Partners a 43 per cent drop.
There has been a fee-income fall across the whole table of 13 per cent, to give an income total of £359m this year for Top 100 groups.
However, consultancies are bullish about the coming year, with 31 groups in the table predicting a fee-income increase of 20 per cent or more over the next 12 months.
Alloy and Spring are the most bullish groups, both predicting a fee-income increase of 60 per cent over the next year, while Pod 1 is predicting a fee-income increase of 40 per cent.

Obviously fee income is interesting to compare and contrast but the reality is that smaller companies with more pressure to produce great ideas and solutions for tight fees tend to drive the way forward. Doing huge rollout projects may generate fees but it’s not necessarily that interesting to highlight.
