Via Design & Communications has been appointed to design an exhibition celebrating the Punk era, to be unveiled at Manchester’s Urbis gallery next month.

Via will design the identity, visuals and promotional material for the show, entitled ‘Punk: Sex, Seditionaries and the Sex Pistols’.

Via is currently at the consultation stage and is working in collaboration with Punk curators Paul Stolper and Andrew Wilson. Trevor Johnson, creative director of Via Design, says, ‘We will be going for a vernacular approach, as we don’t want to parody the period, but want to represent it as accurately as we can.’

Using handmade techniques such as written, stencilled and ransom-note-style text, Via is aiming to recreate the spirit of the 1970s through design that does not rely on computers.

The exhibition, due to open on 26 May, will explore the music, clothing, designs and images of Punk, through the work of three keys players from the period – Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McLaren and Jamie Reid.
