Britain’s latest tabloid newspaper, New Nation, has launched targeting the upwardly-mobile black community.

“We want people to be proud to read this newspaper anywhere,” says Peter Pek, creative director of Morning Star Media, responsible for the design of New Nation.

The impetus behind the new launch was to bring about a fresh, exciting weekly publication, with a design to rival the standards set by the national press. There is a bold use of colour, with the first front page featuring purple, blue and red.

Future issues will include a wider range of colours, particularly in the entertainment and sports sections.

According to Pek, there is room for improvement in the design of publications aimed at the ethnic market: “We deal with a lot of ethnic publications and there is a lack of understanding and appreciation as to why money needs to be spent on design.” As a commitment to maintaining high design standards, the management of New Nation is retaining Morning Star Media as consultants.

Rival paper The Voice is responding with its first major revamp since its 1982 launch.
