The British Library has appointed MoreySmith to develop a concept design for its outdoor Piazza Café, which is scheduled for construction in summer 2005.

The 66m2 space will enable the library to offer a meeting and refreshment area, as well as host evening events. A mix of glass, stainless steel and back-lit graphics panels will be used in the low-rise building (montage pictured). ‘The design will be contemporary and will reflect popular culture,’ says MoreySmith principal director Linda Morey Smith. ‘The space will be highly flexible, enabling it to be used as a coffee shop, a wine bar and a venue for both local functions and major events.’

According to Alex Joyce, head of customer services at the British Library, MoreySmith was selected following its ‘highly successful’ design of an external seating area and the redesign of The Last Word, an existing kiosk at the library.

The Piazza Café will be situated inside the main entrance of the library’s gates on London’s Euston Road.
