Ex-Dome diva insists dictators are good

Stephen Bayley’s most enjoyable unguarded comment of the last few weeks has been judged, after close competition, to be the one made on BBC2 comedy show Friday Night Armistice.

Admitting he wouldn’t mind seeing Peter Mandelson publicly hanged inside the Millennium Dome (as a vox pop of ‘real people’ demanded), he said he had been misquoted over his assertion that Mandelson is a dictator.

Bayley insisted that a good dictator is no bad thing. To qualify the comment he gave the testimonial, ‘I worked for Terence Conran for ten years.’
