How far should we go in ‘pitching’ for work?

I am interested to hear from others how they view “pitching” for design work or, more importantly, where they draw the line.

We at Expression are not afraid of competition, far from it, but we do object to clients taking it for granted that designers will go cap in hand for work at any price.

It’s time to stand up and be counted.

I fully support the idea of pitching for work on substantial projects, but should there be a yardstick?
