Trams back on track in VeloCity

Design Triangle is helping to design a lightweight tram for a consortium of Dutch companies called VeloCity.

The plastic-skinned trams will operate in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. They are designed to appeal to the modern car driver and raise expectations of public transport.

Conceptualisation began in collaboration with Dutch design group Partners in Transport Design, while the engineering and design development is being handled by Design Triangle, which has already built a full-scale mock up of the new tram.

VeloCity is low weight and low cost, says a spokeswoman for the consultancy. “It is a 100 per cent low-floor tram that takes up to 180 people, and is ideal for congested cities. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the tram is that it has a double-skinned composite plastic body.”
