I am writing to express an almighty groan (or is it yawn?) at Wolff Olins’ attempt at UK plc.

I cannot believe the design strategy or rationale behind the seriously flawed design work was based on a brief from any public body or anyone who cares in the slightest for Great Britain.

While I can accept the need for an update as we head for the millennium, we simply cannot expect corporate Britain to put its weight behind such an anodyne piece of design. If Wolff Olins is seeking publicity or trying to demonstrate its leadership of the design industry then this effort will hardly help its own cause, let alone the cause of the design industry.

While on the subject, Wolff Olins’ efforts to break into the music industry with its new national anthem (Review, DW 23 May) would certainly leave this country’s excellent band of lyricists sleeping easily in their beds. Based on this submission Wolff Olins would do well to look to their laurels in design and let someone else more qualified set it to words and music.
