The Kindle won’t set the publishing world alight

In response to last week’s Voxpop (DW 29 November), which asked: will electronic books like Amazon’s Kindle put book designers out of a job or will these devices yield new opportunities?

Whether it is intended for print or screen, content (I hate the word, but what else is there?) needs to be presented in an intelligent, appropriate and appealing way – it needs to be designed. So devices like the Kindle are an opportunity and a challenge for the designer.

From what I’ve seen in pictures so far, there’s also an opportunity here for product designers – to me the Kindle seems more like an experimental Newton than a category-killer iPod.
