Working in the future

If you wondered what the much vaunted “workplace of the future” will involve, I give you one word – wheels. Judging by Cologne’s recent Orgatec office fair, the furniture industry’s response to a debate almost as long-standing and tedious as the free pitching saga is to put wheels on everything as a symbol of flexible working.

Isn’t it time designers took up the cause of office workers, demonstrating that we need more humanity and less emphasis on fads – like wheels – in the workplace? Specifiers surely have as much responsibility for the quality of the working environment as for the kit it contains.
