Engineer seeking own product design team

Gateshead engineering company Express Engineering is seeking to develop its own product design arm or to establish a strategic alliance with an existing product design group.

The privately owned company, which specialises in engineering for clients such as IBM, Compaq and British Gas, already has an engineering design team in-house.

Design director Robin Mackie says that the group, which has 250 employees and a turnover of around 25m, is keen to expand the breadth of the design service it can offer to clients, especially on the aesthetic front.

If the company establishes its own product design team it will be integrated with the existing engineering design facility.

Mackie says the group has made initial contacts with product design consultancies, and a working agreement with a product designer is possible. He says Express will follow one of the two plans “sooner rather than later”.
