As digital artist Daniel Brown celebrates his Designer of the Year title, the Design Museum will be trawling for contenders for 2005’s prize. Who would you put on the shortlist and why?

‘Someone not from within the club of “accepted cool” should get on the shortlist, who’s actually made a difference. The Independent’s in-house design team get my vote for shrinking the newspaper’s format. It’s redefined newspapers by pulling the rug from beneath the pomposity of old Fleet Street thinking, that only broadsheets truly deliver intelligent reporting.’

Simon Manchipp, Director of design, No One

‘For me it would be Thomas Heatherwick. He’s a big name already, but his work is as interesting as ever. Grand, progressive, elegant statements with a light touch. He is the definitive noughty-boy of design.’

Nicolas Roope, Creative director, Poke

‘The award helps identify new talent and I’d like to see Sam Hecht on the short list, but let’s move on from the cult of the individual and nominate teams, such as Engine or Livework, that change how we think about design.’

Clive Grinyer, World director of customer experience, Orange
