Survey shows starting pay down

Salaries for senior appointments in design have fallen over the past year amid signs that costs are being further reined in, according to Design Week’s latest salary survey.

The salary for a managing director in London has dropped by more than 10 per cent, while a new salary for a creative director would be down by 6 per cent. Recruitment agencies report a glut of candidates, but very few positions available at the top of the tree.

Overall, our survey suggests the optimism expressed by recruitment agencies at the start of the year has not been fulfilled, and that, across the board, salary increases indicated by last year’s survey have not been sustained. There is considerable divergence of opinion about the future.
