Extracting the bare facts at Selfridges

Big buildings can cause design headaches. For fire safety reasons, the giant atrium which will be introduced in department store Selfridges as part of its masterplan refurbishment will have to be topped with a huge extractor fan.

While creative designers can make the fan blend in and appear part of the original design, they cannot disguise one fact. If a fire alarm causes it to be switched on, the force of the fan will apparently whip off customers’ toupees as they walk beneath it, five floors below.
