DEFINE Postmodernism. Quickly. What the hell does it mean?
What does “post” affixed to “modernism” actually mean?
The book Postmodernism for Beginners, written by Richard Appignanesi and illustrated by Chris Garratt, attempts to scatter a little light, but may not enlighten.
According to Appignanesi, the P-word could be a result of Modernism, the aftermath of Modernism, the afterbirth of Modernism, the development of Modernism, the denial of Modernism or the rejection of Modernism.
Appignanesi concludes that Postmodernism “resists and obscures the sense of Modernism and implies a complete knowledge of the modern which has been surpassed by a new age”. Any the wiser?
