LIGHTING consultancy Jonathan Speirs & Associates is designing lighting schemes for two diverse projects in Bombay and Croydon.

The consultancy is working with architect HOK’s London office on the rebuilding of the HQ of petrochemical to textiles conglomerate Reliance Industries in the heart of the Indian city.

The six-storey building includes new-build elements with the retention of an existing facade. The project will create some “very grand spaces”, says Jonathan Speirs, for what is “very much a corporate statement”.

The consultancy, which works extensively with HOK, is designing lighting for the building’s exterior, public spaces, and executive areas, and developing lighting guidelines for offices. The project should be completed towards the end of next year.

Speirs has also been appointed to two projects for Croydon. It is developing a lighting strategy for the centre of Croydon and for two district centres in Thornton Heath and South Norwood. It is also working on a permanent “light show” for Wellesley Road – Croydon’s “main drag through its centre”, says Speirs.

The idea is to lure people into the centre of Croydon after the working day by designing lighting to help develop perceptions of safety and crime prevention.
