BAA has recently launched the first of its new terminal lounges at Heathrow Terminal 3. The Island lounge provides all the comforts of a business lounge to passengers with any airline or ticket type, for an entrance fee of £25.

As lead design consultants to the project, Pentagram developed a branding proposition for the lounges that focused on ‘contemporary British’ values. It created the brand name and the graphics, while Din Associates developed the interior design for what is their first airport lounge.

The Island lounge is a 700m2 space which aims to provide a calm, hushed environment within the hectic airport location. ‘It’s a place to relax, rather than wait for a flight,’ says Angela Drinkall, project director at Din Associates. ‘Other lounges are for grabbing a coffee before dashing off, while this is an oasis, very much focused on cleansing and wellbeing,’ she says. Aimed specifically at business travellers arriving from long-haul flights, the Island offers travellers a chance to refresh before important meetings or airline transfers.

The Island has a specific spa feel, with 29 luxury shower suites, into which passengers can book at the reception desk. The shower suite can be accessed via a route which has a focal water wall featuring a projected image of The Island symbol. There is also a valet service, which provides the latest steam technology for crumpled clothes.

The lounge offers refreshments from the bar area – furnished with seating by Andreu World – a business area with Internet, ISDN, fax and phone facilities, and a quieter reading area. The lounge features Balzac lounging chairs by Matthew Hilton and a mix of limestone and stained cherry veneer on walls and floors. The reading area is separated from the lounge by a full-length stone-clad wall and features a brighter ‘conservatory’ atmosphere, thanks to a full-length skylight and day-lit opaque wall. BAA plans to roll out The Island lounges in departure and arrivals areas at other BAA-run airports.
