Tesco plans £1.1bn overseas expansion

Tesco Property Services’ in-house design team is to head a £1.1bn overseas expansion programme. The project will see the leading UK supermarket chain open 226 stores in Europe and the Far East over the next 18 months.

Tesco head of retail environment design Jeremy Lindley refuses to confirm which design groups will be involved with the stores in Poland, Hungary and Thailand. He says: “We work with three main agencies and four or five other groups.” The Property Services design groups are separate from those on Tesco’s mainstream roster.

“The stores will be designed in-house with support from various consultancies, but we use a variety of people on different projects,” says Lindley. He declines to comment on site layouts.
